Synagogue Review - Beth El:
(September 20, 2010)
I am told there are a total
of 17 synagogues in Casablanca
although they might not all be
operational. Beth El is close
(walking distance) to a handful of
smaller synagogues and by far is the
biggest and the most beautiful one
of all. Apparently you needed a
reservation to attend the services
years ago however it was only about
15% - 20% full ( 120 people ) during
the Yom Kippur services, what a shame.
A few more people showed up in the
afternoon (Yom Kippur) as the
Governor of the Casablanca and his
entourage showed up for a photo op
along with the U.S. Ambassador to
Morocco who happens to be Jewish.
This synagogue is a MUST see,
along with the handful of other ones
within a walking distance.
I highly recommend visiting at least
a couple of other small ones very
close by to get a feel for the
history and possibly a couple of pix.
Beth El is guarded by local police.
You might have to donate a
couple of dollars!
