TWISTED CHALAH
Preparation
time: about 3 hours |
INGREDIENTS: |
- 1 package yeast
- ¼ cup warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 8 cups flour
- ½ pound butter or margarine
- 3 egg yolks
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 pint milk or water

DIRECTIONS: |
Dissolve yeast in the ¼ cup warm water
and the 1 teaspoon sugar. Put flour in a large bowl. Add the yeast
mixture, mix well by hand. Add butter and egg yolks. Add the ¼ cup
sugar. Add milk gradually, working in well until the butter is
absorbed. Let rise until dough has doubled in size.
Place dough on lightly floured board.
Roll out to about 1 inch thickness: cut into wide strips. Take two
strips and twist together. Continue until all pieces are used up.
Cut each of these twisted strips into three pieces. Each piece
consists of two strips braided together. On a greased baking sheet,
place two of these braded strips side by side. Lay the third braided
stip directly on top of the two strips. Continue with all the
strips. Let rise until double in size. Brush tops with beaten egg.
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 1 hour or until nice and brown. |
