An Open Letter to Honorable Rudolph Giuliani
Rabbi
Shea Hecht
About
the Author
An Open
Letter to the World's Greatest Mayor
The Honorable Rudolf W. Giuliani
My Dear
Mayor,
I write this letter to express my
support of your candidacy for the
office of the President of the
United States.
From 1993 through the year 2001 and
beyond, I had the opportunity to
work closely with you and your
administration. As a leader of my
respective community, there were
many issues for which I found myself
at City Hall attending meetings and
rallies. I was impressed with your
integrity and work ethic.
With my appointment as a
commissioner of Human Rights I had
the opportunity to work with you
more often and it was then that I
saw even more clearly your
commitment to human rights, safety
and equality for all.
Mayor Giuliani, you are clearly a
strong fighter of terrorism. When on
September 11th, 2001, America
suffered the worst attack in its
history, I was not the only New
Yorker who felt safer and stronger
knowing that you were there at the
helm to lead the city through this
tough period. I remember with pride,
your efforts during those uncertain
days when - like a true leader - you
were there in the forefront every
single day taking charge and giving
your all 24/7. I remember clearly
standing at Ground Zero with other
clergy with you and President Bush
the Friday following the attack,
saying prayers for the safety of our
country.
Another reason why I support your
bid for presidency is because of
your unwavering solidarity of the
only democratic state in the Middle
East - Israel.
In 1995, the United Nations held a
gala concert at Lincoln Center in
NYC. Observing Yasir Arafat entering
the hall, you ordered that the PLO
leader be told to leave. It was
reported, that when you were accused
of overstepping your role by
pursuing your own foreign policy,
you retorted, "I would not invite
Yasir Arafat to anything, anywhere,
anytime. I don't forget," referring
to the PLO's 1986 murder of American
Leon Klinghoffer. You made it clear
that terrorists weren't invited,
even if they considered themselves
leaders of a country. For that I
applaud you. Through that you earned
not only my respect, but the respect
of all peace loving people.
Following
the attacks on 9/11, when a Saudi prince
gave the city a relief check for $10
million, and then said U.S. policies
were partly to blame for the World Trade
Center attack you returned his donation.
Whatta Mayor! Only in New York. Your
refusal of the millions from the Saudi
prince proved that you can't be bought
and that your moral compass rings true
in contrast to other's moral confusion.
Mayor
Giuliani, in 2002, you wrote a number
one best-seller, Leadership, which has
sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
I'm not shocked that the book sold so
well. It did because everyone knew that
the author didn't just write a book
about the subject of leadership. They
knew that the author, the great Mayor of
New York City, was a great example of
leadership.
For this
upcoming presidential election, you
mapped out your goals in your 12
Commitments to the American People.
These clearly defined goals define who
you are - a man who thinks clearly and
knows what he wants to accomplish and
how to get there.
You call
upon the American people to support
your bid for president of the
greatest country in the world. I for
one support you for you're a man of
your word in a world where such men
are sorely needed. In this world
where terrorism remains the number
one threat, you are the best person
to fight it.
Looking forward to being greeted by
you and your administration in the
White House in January, 09.
Sincerely,
Your friend and supporter
Shea Hecht
