Synagogue
of Montbéliard
was built in 1888 by city architect Karl
Friedrich Surleau for a Jewish community while
expanding due to the arrival of many Alsatian
Jews after the war of 1870-71.
Building a sober, neo novel.
Inside, two golden cherubs musicians are seated
on either side atop the Holy Ark, inspired both
cherubim which surmounted the Ark original filed
in the Temple of Jerusalem and the Christian art
that blends angelic figures and mythological
love.
