History of Jewish life in Luneville:
The community was formed around 1753 Lunévillle
(official permission for Jews to reside in the Duchy of
Lorraine).
The synagogue was built in 1785. It
is the first synagogue in France to receive the royal
permission.
The Jewish population of Luneville is from Lorraine, Alsace,
descendants of Jews from Eastern Europe and also North
Africa since 1962.
Rabbi Alfred Levy was one of the leading personalities of
the community.
