SYNAGOGUES IN
LIBOURNE, FRANCE:
Libourne (Occitan: Liborna) is a
commune in the Gironde department in Aquitaine in south-western France.
It is a sub-prefecture of the department. It is the wine-making capital
of northern Gironde and lies near Saint Emilion and Pomerol. Libourne is
located at the confluence of the isle and Dordogne rivers.
From the first quarter of the 19th
century onwards, quite a large Israeli community installed itself in the
town of Libourne. So as to respond to demand from this community, the
building of a place of worship was decided on. The synagogue was built
in 1847. Gautier, its architect, designed it from the neo-classical
canons. Made of plain elm and of graceful proportions, this "little
temple" has integrated itself into the dense urban fabric of the
mediaeval town of Libourne.
The Libourne Synagogue remained closed 50 years, during the first half
of the 20th century.
The arrival of Jews from North Africa in the 1960s made it possible to
reopen the building to the redeveloping part.
