| Hong
Kong has many private hospitals, but not all have an outpatient
department, which means they are not suitable for emergency treatment.
Private health care is also quite expensive, so many expatriates insist
on having health insurance included in their employment packages.
Doctors and hospitals generally do not accept credit cards and require
immediate cash payment for health services.
All
Hong Kong's public hospitals and government clinics are available to
everyone, but services and facilities are strictly no frills and you may
have to wait long hours while more urgent cases are dealt with. Fees in
public hospitals and clinics are subsidized. Patients in general wards
of public hospitals are charged HK$68 a day, a fee that includes food,
accommodation, tests, medicine and surgery. A consultation at a general
outpatient clinic costs HK$37, while a specialist consultation costs
HK$44 per session.
For
ambulance service, dial 999 and a government ambulance will take the
patient to the nearest emergency facility or a private hospital if time
allows.
