THE MASSACRES:

...The restructuring of the Hispanic Jews was a process that lasted almost 100 years, beginning in 1391 CE in the city of Sevilla. Bloody massacres took place and spread throughout other parts of Spain. It is believed that out of the many thousands of Jews in Spain 1/3rd were murdered, 1/3rd saved their lives by converting to Christianity (thus beginning the phenomenon of Marranos), and the last 1/3rd, who tried to keep their faith, lived under the pressure of threats and temptations to convert, which many of them did and ended up becoming Marranos. Others fled the country.

After the massacres which killed over 4000 Jews in Toledo alone, the period of religious tolerance ended and in 1405 CE the Christians converted the Synagogues into churches.

Synagogue of the Transit  (בית הכנסת שמואל הלוי)-
 After the expulsion of the Sephardic Jews in 1,459,
 the Christians took over this Synagogue.
