20 February 2014   KASHRUT NOTICE   21 ADAR 5774

After extensive testing and the application of relevant halachic principles, the Beth Din has revised the checking/cleaning methods for strawberries.

There are three changes from the previous method. First, it is no longer necessary to sponge the strawberries down. Second, they need not be vigorously agitated in the water; just some light “swooshing” will suffice. Third, there is no need to cut them in half to look inside for worms.

The new method is as follows:

1. Cut off (don't pull off!) the green leaf with about 1mm of the fruit.
2. Cut off any mushy parts as well as deep folds.
3. Soak the strawberries in very soapy water for 3 minutes.
4. After the soaking, the strawberries must be agitated in the water
5. Carefully wash the entire surface of each strawberry under a stream of cold water.

Office of the Chief Rabbi has established a special task force to find a solution to the high price of kosher chickens in Johannesburg. The Chief Rabbi has appointed Mr Robert Brozin, Founder of Nandos, to head the task force. Mr Brozin's mandate it is to use his extensive network and knowledge of the industry to find an innovative way to bring down the chicken price for the kosher consumer.

“This is an imperative”, said the Chief Rabbi, “financial pressures on people today are immense and we need to find ways of alleviating the economic burden of our community.” Mr Brozin says, “Everyone should be able to afford to keep kosher, and I hope to be able to make a difference.” Chief Rabbi Goldstein acknowledged the challenges ahead, “We cannot guarantee a successful outcome because there are complex market forces at play, but we must give our full efforts and energy to finding the best possible solutions. The halacha champions the alleviation of a financial burden as an essential Torah value. I am delighted that Mr Brozin agreed to accept this appointment to head the task force. He brings with him a formidable track record of business acumen, industry knowledge and innovation as well as an exemplary commitment to the South African Jewish community. He is the perfect man for the job.”

NOTICE TO PUBLIC RE BOEREWORS CASINGS

Due to a shortage of supply of Mehadrin boerewors casings internationally, the Beth Din has approved the use of non-Mehadrin casings to be used for the production of boerewors. All other products that require casings will continue to be produced with Mehadrin casing. All boerewors produced with non-Mehdrin casings will have a sticker clearly stipulating “NOT MEHADRIN” on the packaging. The boerewors  meat itself within the casing is nevertheless considered Mehadrin. All products packed as “NOT MEHADRIN” are considered completely  kosher. Boerewors produced with Mehadrin casings will have a sticker clearly stipulating “MEHADRIN” on the packaging. We are working together with the suppliers and overseas Kashrut agencies to try to resolve the problem of lack of a supply and hope that this change is only an interim measure.

23 April 2013 (May 23, 13)   KASHRUT NOTICE   14 Sivan 5773

We are aware of the current difficulties being experienced in sourcing sufficient quantities of supervised Chalav Yisrael milk, cheese and yoghurts.

We are sensitive to the needs of the Chalav Yisrael community and are doing everything within our power to bring about a change in the situation.

One of the main issues we have to deal with is the size of the kosher community, which in consumer terms, is relatively small, and within that, the demand for supervised Chalav Yisrael products is even smaller.

Manufacturers are reluctant to produce products where demand is not sufficient to justify the additional expenses and resources required for production of these products.

However, we remain committed to ensuring that supply (and quality) meets demand and will continue our efforts in this regard.

7. OUTSIDE OF GAUTENG

The above info applies nationally. The exception is flour which varies from region to region. The only info we have regarding flour outside of Gauteng is for the Durban area, where Snowflake flour remains Yoshon for now.

WHAT IS YOSHON?

Yoshon literally means "old". The Torah (Vayikra 23:14) forbids partaking from the new crop of grain (known as Chadash) before the second day of Pesach. This restriction applies to 5 types of grain, i.e. wheat, barley, oats, rye and spelt.

Although the origin of this prohibition is Biblical, there is an old dispute between the Halachic authorities whether this applies outside of Israel, and even in Israel whether it applies to the crops of a non-Jewish farmer. Many authorities rule that these restrictions do not apply outside of Israel, and consequently the Beth Din do not require our establishments and manufacturers to adhere to these stringencies. However, for those who wish to follow the more stringent opinion, we have compiled a list of products and sell-by dates which will assist in making observance of this mitzvah easier.

The only way to avoid using any new-season products containing wheat, barley, oats or rye is by stockpiling enough of these products to last until Pesach.

This sounds simple enough. But there's a problem. Often, before Pesach has arrived, something else arrives: infestation! Therefore, if you want to keep Yoshon, make sure to store flour etc in the freezer and other things in a cool, dry place. Also check carefully for infestation before use.

What products are affected? Initially it's mainly wheat flour, pasta, wheat grains, and cereals containing wheat. Barley and oats become affected only later in the season.

The Kashrut Department will issue regular bulletins updating information during the period when Chadash is a problem.

We wish to thank Rabbi Yossi Salzer for his tireless efforts in researching and compiling this information.

14 September 2012      27 Elul 5772      KASHRUT NOTICE

Produce of Israel (Terumah & Ma’aser)

Grains, fruits, and vegetables (and their extracts) that grow in the halachic boundaries of Eretz Yisrael are subject to many extra kashrut laws due to the kedusha (holiness) of the land. These include:

• The requirement to separate terumah (the Priestly tithe)

• The requirement to separate the various forms of ma’aser (tithes for the Levites, the poor, and the portion that was to be eaten in Jerusalem in Temple times)

• Shmita (produce of the Sabbatical year)

• A stricter form of Orla (produce of a tree within its first 3 years).

Processed foods from Israel with a reliable hechsher guarantees that all these halachic issues have been taken care of.

All pomegranates bought after 12 p.m. today have had Terumah and Ma’aser separated at the following retail stores:

· Food Lover’s Market Norwood, · Freshfellas, · Kosherworld, · Pick n Pay Norwood

Fresh Produce

The Kashrut Department is now aware of the following fruit that are being imported from Eretz Yisrael and require Terumah and Ma’aser to be separated:

 Figs  · Plums · Nectarines · Peaches · Mango · Black Grapes · Pomegranates

Instructions on how to separate Terumah and Ma’aser can be found on the UOS website (http://www.uos.co.za/kashrut/prodIsrael.asp).

Fresh Produce

The Kashrut Department is now aware of the following fruit that are being imported from Eretz Yisrael and require Terumah and Ma’aser to be separated:

  • Avocado
  • Citrus
  • Pomegranates
  • Strawberry

How to separate Terumah and the various forms of Ma’aser

  • Place all of the food that needs to be tithed in one place.
  • Put a bit more than 1% of the food aside (if separating for more than one food species at one time, then you must put aside a bit more than 1% of each food species and place it next to the group from which it was separated). Then say this declaration (without a brochah):

“I hereby declare the excess of the one percent portion that was set aside to be the Priestly tithe and note that it is located on the northern side.” [If separating for more than one food species, then add: “Each species for its own kind.”]

”The one percent remaining here, together with nine equal portions at the upper side of this produce, is declared to be the first [Levite] tithe.” [If separating for more than one food species, then add: “Each species for its own kind.”]

“The one percent that I have made to be part of the first tithe is hereby declared to be the terumah portion of the tithe.”

“If the tithe of the poor is required to be separated - the Ma'aser Ani is to be on its southern side." [ If  separating for more than one food species, then add "Each species for its own kind"]

"If the second tithe is required to be separated - the Ma'aser Sheni is to be on its southern side [ If separating for  more than one food species, then add: "Each species for its own kind"].It and its extra fifth are hereby redeemed onto one Perutah that the director of "the Fund for the redemption of Ma'aser Sheni and Revai" has designated for the Johannesburg Beth Din, for the purpose of such redemption."

"If the produce is Revai (fourth-year fruit), then it and its extra fifth are hereby redeemed onto one Perutah that the director of "the Fund for the redemption of Ma'aser Sheni and Revai" has designated for the Johannesburg Beth Din, for the purpose of such redemption."

  • If you have difficulty reciting the above text, you can say this abbreviated version:

“I hereby set aside all the T’rumot and Ma’asrot and redeem all Ma’aser Sheni according to the halachah, as is written in the text for members of ‘The Fund for the Redemption of Ma’aser Sheniand Revai’ per the Johannesburg Beth Din.”

• Securely wrap up the separated produce and discard.

• The remaining food is now permitted to be eaten.

Please note that “Israeli” tomatoes are usually locally grown (as are “English” cucumbers). Check the label to verify.

If you are willing to assist us by becoming part of this team of people checking in your own homes and reporting back to us, please contact Pinchas Godberg via email (pinchas@uos.co.za).

25 March 2011     19 Adar II 5771     KASHRUT NOTICE

We have been advised by the Orthodox Union of America (OU) that Jaffa Gold and Primor  Fruit Juices, imported from Israel, bear an unauthorised “OU-P” sticker.

Some Primor fruit juices contain the words “Kosher l’Pesach” in Hebrew on the barcode sticker. These are also not approved.

While these products are kosher for year round use (under a different reliable hechsher), they have not been approved for Pesach.

It is important for the consumer to check each and every product purchased for Pesach, even when found in the "Pesach Section" of the supermarket.

The Beth Din does not control the purchases of the retailers and placement of Pesach products in the supermarkets, and it remains the responsibility of the consumer to ensure that any items purchased carry a valid Pesach hechsher (e.g. each and every soup cube).

Some imported products contain the words “Kosher l’Pesach” in Hebrew or English, printed on either the label or price sticker. In the absence of a recognisable and reliable hechsher on the same label or sticker, this wording alone should not be relied upon.

Please also note that many imported products, especially from Israel, carry a valid Pesach hechsher but contain "kitniyot". The custom among Ashkenazi Jews is not to consume kitniyot on Pesach.

You can now download your sale of chametz forms or sell your chametz online, via the UOS website www.uos.co.za

You will also be able to see previous Pesach related alerts and bulletins.

We will soon have the Pesach Guide available on the website as well as:

PESACH GUIDE UPDATE

On page 39 of the Pick ‘n Pay Beth Din Passover Guide, under the heading “Use of Stoves & Ovens on Yom Tov,” it erroneously states:

A gas stove or oven may only be lit on Shabbat or Yom Tov from an existing flame.

The words “on Shabbat” should be deleted (as lighting, even from an existing flame, is certainly prohibited on Shabbat) so that the sentence correctly reads:

A gas stove or oven may only be lit on Yom Tov from an existing flame.

PRODUCT NOTICE:

A small batch of Kleine Draken Red Grape Juice was adversely affected due to excessive heat during transportation. Thus far, the problem has only been reported with bottles that state Kosher L’Pesach (in Hebrew) on the neck of the bottle near the cap.

Prior to opening the bottles, the company recommends that consumers turn the bottles upside down and look carefully to see if the product appears cloudy. If so, do not use and exchange the product at the store of purchase. (Once opened, affected bottles will immediately begin to fizz due to the fermentation that has taken place from the heat.)

There is no problem with the White Grape Juice.
