Shalom and Bracha!

This Shabbat is Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av, we read the portion of Masei, and conclude the book of Bamidbar. When Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh fall together, there is a unique sanctity. Shabbat represents the sanctity which comes from Hashem. Hashem rested on the seventh day, and since then every seventh day Hashem has repeated the revelation of the holiness of Shabbat. By keeping Shabbat, we share in the holiness of the day, but we donít make the day holy. Rosh Chodesh is sanctified by human beings, by the Sanhedrin (Jewish court). Rosh Chodesh is the first day of the new moon. In previous times, when the Sanhedrin accepted the testimony of witnesses that the new moon had been seen, they declared the day to be Rosh Chodesh. If they rejected the testimony, the next day was Rosh Chodesh. The calendar we use today is valid because the Sanhedrin that established the calendar sanctified all of the days of Rosh Chodesh until Moshiach will come and we will return to the original system. All of the holidays are dependent upon Rosh Chodesh. Rosh Chodesh is sanctity through human effort. Shabbat Rosh Chodesh represents the fusion of both types of sanctity.

We find a similar fusion of sanctity concerning the third Temple. Some sources refer to the third Temple as the work of G-d. Other sources refer to it as the work of man. Both have advantages. Hashemís work is holier. Manís work is the purpose of creation. In fact, the third Temple will be comprised of both, allowing the fusion of both sanctities.

The Torah portion this week is Masei, journeys. The name of the portion teaches us that we must constantly move forward. If we are not stepping forward, we are slipping backward. One of the Mitzvot in the portion is the cities of refuge. If a person was convicted of manslaughter, he was sent to a city of refuge. There, he was free from prosecution, persecution and revenge. The Shabbats of the three weeks are like a city of refuge. All of the laws of mourning do not apply, and on the contrary, they are days of intense joy. One explanation is that on Shabbat we feel and experience the higher meaning of these three weeks, that thy are a preparation for the coming of Moshiach and the revelations that will far outshine the first and second Temples.

When we finish a book of the Chumash, if is called Shabbat Chazak (strength). At the conclusion of the reading, everyone calls out Chazak Chazak Vínitchazaik (be strong, be strong, let us be strong.) This is because the conclusion of every Mitzvah is a wellspring of strength and encouragement. This Shabbat ushers in the nine days, when we intensify the mourning for the destruction of the Temple. In this period of adversity, the strength Hashem grants us this Shabbat Chazak is sufficiently to allow us to change the negative to the positive.

Menachem Av means the comforting of the Father. May our Father comfort us this Shabbat with the coming of Moshiach and the construction of the third Temple.

  Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov,

  Rabbi Biggs

Dedicated to Michael Ashley on the occasion of his birthday. May Hashem bless him in every aspect of his life, granting him good health, joy from his family, and tremendous success in all of his endeavors.

The Rebbe has stressed that studying the laws of the construction of the Temple helps bring Moshiach and rebuilds the Temple. There is a great website about the three weeks which includes a wealth of information about the Temple and its construction at http://www.chabadgn.com/holidays/3weeks  Through studying the construction of the Temple, we help rebuild it.

The Talmud teaches that increasing Torah study brings Hashem's protection to the Jewish people and particularly to the people of Israel. If you know of anyone who might enjoy Torah e mail, please send me their addresses.

Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Yonassan Biggs is from Chabad of Great Neck, NY. His website is: http://www.chabadgn.com/
