the past ten days,
the situation here in
is deteriorating with no end in sight. Well over a thousand cars
have been set afire in the street. Just a few hundred yards from
our office in the Place de
, several vehicles have been set afire. City buses have been
burnt, trains have been disrupted while carrying hundreds of
passengers, etc. The images of
and its suburbs literally burning are true.
we were told by the authorities that it was an isolated incident
in the suburbs and would be brought under control rapidly. Then,
as the violence spread, from city to city, we realized that the
government had lost control of the situation.
once again politics is at the center of the current events.
Presidential elections are scheduled for next year and the two
front runners, the current Prime Minister, Mr. De Villepin (Chiracís
preference), and Mr. Sarkozy, the present Interior Minister, are
thinking more about votes than putting an end to the current
report that the French public is in a state of shock. Violence and
rioting of this magnitude hasnít been seen here in many years.
The French equate these types of events to the Middle East (
for the Jewish community,
we have been once again thrown in to a period of uncertainty and
of the original venues
where the young Muslims started the rioting do not have major
Jewish communities. In the past two days, they have entered towns
and cities that have a major Jewish presence; synagogues,
community centers, schools, etc. The police have promised to
protect us and have taken concrete steps to that affect. We can
only hope and pray that the violence does not spread any further
and take on an anti-
/ anti-Semitic agenda.
are in constant contact
with the French authorities at the highest level, and are trying
to prevent the unthinkable from happening.
it is hard to believe that we are once again faced with a
nightmare of this magnitude where we must think twice before going
anywhere, even just several minutes from home.
join me in praying
that the Jewish community be spared, and that G-d
protect our families from harm.
