ENGLISH TRANSLATION, SCHNEIDER CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER OF ISRAEL
Excerpts from TV interview on Channel 1, December 31, 2005, 20:00

SPECIAL BROADCAST FROM THE HOME OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL, MOSHE KATZAV, DURING HANNUKAH FOR "MAASIM TOVIM"  (GOOD DEEDS)

Interviewer: So we are talking about ability, an ability to live together really together, Jews and Arabs on a daily basis, as they did at the time in Gush Katif or the Gaza Strip. And here is an interesting story that we have brought to you Mr. President. With us is Dr. Jerry Stein, Director of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit at Schneider Children's Medical Center and Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad and his son, Amin. Thank you all for coming. How do we connect two worlds? How did the connection between you begin Dr. Stein?

Dr. Stein: Amin was referred to Schneider Children's about 4˝ to 5 years ago because of leukemia. They had to actually travel at the peak of the intifada (years of violence) when passing through checkpoints was very difficult. Amin did not feel well and would have to endure traffic jams for many hours until he entered Israel. It was very, very tough for them especially during the period when he had to receive daily injections of chemotherapy. On Fridays and Saturdays the checkpoints were closed and no-one was allowed to enter or leave. It appeared that I lived about one kilometer away from him with a hill in between. So we thought that it would make it easier for Amin if he could get the injections at my home. But since it was impossible for him to enter our village where I lived, we would meet on the road in my car. They would arrive by car and he would receive the treatment from me sometimes on the hood of my car, sometimes inside. If it was raining he would sit inside with me. He would cry a bit when he received the injection but it was always something special which I think gave both of us a great feeling.

Interviewer: How long did the treatment ensue outside Karnei Shomron where you live?

Dr. Stein: A number of weeks. I stopped treatment when there was a devastating terror attack (at the Karnei Shomron Mall) when we were exposed to terror in our own homes.

Interviewer: But you had endured a number of terrorist attacks before in your area and despite this, you continued to treat Amin outside the boundaries of your village.

Dr. Stein: Yes.

Interviewer: You weren’t afraid.

Dr. Stein: I love my work, I love the children who I treat, and that love overrode the fear until a point where apparently even I broke down.

Interviewer: Azam, you are a resident of Jinsfut right next to Karnei Shomron.

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Close, yes.

Interviewer: So you are actually neighbors.

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Yes.

Interviewer: But how did you relate to the matter when Dr. Stein came and treated Amin on his car, alongside the road, what did y our friends and village neighbors say, how did they accept this?

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: That is something very wonderful here; here is the place of an attack, this is medication. You know that Israel is the first in medications, you do not have the mess (we have) and I felt very good, very good.

President Katzav: You are speaking about medical treatment, one would think that you are talking about the transfer of a medical prescription or wound dressing.

Interviewer: This is life-saving treatment.

President Katzav: Treating a child with leukemia by injection is much more serious. Normally, this is treatment that would be given in hospital, correct?

Dr. Stein: We succeed in bringing these injections to the community so that children can receive them in their clinics. Prior to the arrangement we made, Amin would have to travel eastwards in the opposite direction in order to obtain the injection in Nablus I believe.

Interviewer: That is exactly the point that I want to ask Azam about. Had Dr. Stein not been able to come to your aid and give the injections, what would have happened from your perspective? Would you have had to go to Nablus every time?

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Go to Nablus which is 20 minutes away. With checkpoints, it takes over an hour.

Interviewer: And cause hardship to Amin along the way.

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Yes.

Interviewer: And it is very expensive as well for you.

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Yes, yes.

Interviewer: You in fact had to leave work to look after him.

Azam Mahmoud Abu Saad: Five years without work. My situation at the moment is very difficult. But Amin is healthy and feels well, bless the Lord.

President Katzav: Here we see that humanitarian responsibilities have no borders. Not religious, not national, not geographic, here is the proof.
