ABOUT
THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY- CANBERRA |
| In 1911, an area of 2,368
square kilometers was transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia by the
State of New State Wales (NSW) to become the Australian Capital Territory
(ACT). The city of Canberra, Australia's
national capital, is located in the northern part of this area, 300 km
south-west of Sydney and 650 km north-east of Melbourne by road. On 11 May
1989 self-government for the Territory was proclaimed.
The Eastern Standard Time is 10 hours ahead
of Greenwich Mean Time.
Of the six States and two Territories which
comprise the Commonwealth of Australia, the ACT has the highest population
density but it is the smallest State/Territory in area.

The National Jewish Memorial Centre was
opened in 1971 as a memorial for the Australian Jewish soldiers of World
War I and World War II. The Synagogue provides for the needs of the Jewish
Orthodox and Liberal communities.
The building is in the shape of a hammer, one end being two-story. On the
ground floor, there is a foyer, library and multi-purpose rooms, as well
as the Orthodox Shul with the arc and scrolls.
Orthodox services are 6pm Fri and 9.30am Sat; Liberal services are the 2nd
and last Friday of the month at 6pm.
